IADT Dun Laoghaire- New Digital Media Building

The Digital Media Building at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dun Laoghaire marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of higher education infrastructure. Designed by BDP Architects, the facility spans 7,385m² and will accommodate 920 students across disciplines such as design, animation & VFX, enterprise, and technology. With the capacity to host nearly 600 additional students, this building will provide an innovative, collaborative environment for the next generation of creative professionals.

The development comprises 19 cutting-edge digital design studios, advanced computer laboratories, seminar rooms, and a 600-seat restaurant, all of which are designed to foster creativity and interdisciplinary learning. Green design features are integral to the project, including photovoltaic panels integrated at roof level, contributing to the building’s 78.7% Excellent BREEAM rating. This certification highlights the building’s exceptional environmental performance, energy efficiency, and reduced carbon impact.

As B-Discern (LWM), we were responsible for the design stage submission and worked closely with OCSC from Dublin, Ireland, to ensure the project met the highest sustainability standards. Our role included coordinating the BREEAM certification process, ensuring that energy-efficient systems, sustainable materials, and other green design elements were fully integrated into the design, achieving a building that balances functionality with sustainability.

The Digital Media Building is a testament to IADT’s ongoing commitment to creating a cutting-edge, environmentally responsible learning environment. The project reflects the Institute’s vision to respond to the growing demand for creative, media, and technological education, ensuring that students have access to the most innovative and energy-efficient facilities available.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, and IADT’s President, David Smith, both noted the transformative nature of this development. This project represents the largest capital investment in IADT’s 25-year history and will play a crucial role in meeting the needs of Ireland’s dynamic creative economy.

With construction now underway, the building is set to enhance IADT’s reputation and provide a state-of-the-art space for future generations of students. We look forward to the successful completion of this landmark project.
